While talking to your parents about sex may seem like the end of world, not talking about it could mean the difference between being protected and being at risk for some unpleasant situations later on down the road. Surprisingly to most teens, parents can be a great resource and the conversation may not go as bad as you think. You may feel that your parents might be judgmental, disappointed, or uncomfortable when they actually might have the complete opposite reaction. Keep in mind that your parents have had sex at least once in their lifetime since you’re here reading this.
According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services-Office of Adolescent Health, “The majority of parents want to talk to their teens about sex, sexuality, and relationships and most teens want to hear from their parents about these topics.” Sometimes parents may just not know what to say, so bringing up the topic can make it easier for everyone involved.
Don’t be shy to ask the tough questions and listen to what your parents have to say. You may be pleasantly surprised at how talking about this often-hushed topic can really benefit you in the long run.
