Are You Ready for Prom?

Prom season is officially here!

As you prepare for what may very well be the best night of your high school career, keep these safety tips in mind.

  1. Have a plan for after. Before the fun even begins, make sure you have a plan for after the fact. Who is driving home? Where are you staying? Do you need to check in with your parents? All of these are important questions to know the answer to before you head out for the evening.
  2. Steer clear of the alcohol. While it may seem exciting, it’s just more headache than it’s worth since you’re most likely underage and the consequences are pretty intense. If you do decide to drink, make sure to drink responsibly by eating, drinking a lot of water, having a friend who is sober that can take care of you, and counting your drinks. Also, DO NOT DRIVE!!!! IF YOU NEED TO GET SOMEWHERE AND YOU’VE BEEN DRINKING, CALL AN UBER OR A SOBER FRIEND!!!
  3. You don’t have to have sex, but if you do, make sure you’re prepared mentally and physically. Make sure you talk with your partner about boundaries and what you’re comfortable doing and not doing. Also, make sure you have the proper protection on hand, whether that’s male condoms, female condoms, or dental dams. And don’t forget, you are not obligated to have sex, just because it is prom night. You can always say ‘no’ at any time and stop if you change your mind.
  4. Pay attention when driving. Because it is an exciting night, it’s easy to be slightly distracted while driving, especially if you have a group of friends in the car. Stay focused on driving and getting everyone to and from the event safely.
